Land vs Sea is a clever tile-placement puzzle where players compete to control territories—one building lands, the other building seas. Each player plays double-sided hex tiles to expand a shared map, scoring points for completed land or sea areas. But here's the twist: bonus points tempt you to complete rival territories, strategic tile options let you play twice or steal opponent tiles, and escalating complexity modes (Mountains, Coral, Trade Routes, Waypoints) add surprising depth. With 2–4 player modes plus a unique 3-player Cartographer variant, Land vs Sea scales from light family gaming to thoughtful strategy.

How to play

Players take turns placing one hex tile from their hand onto a shared map. Land places tiles trying to complete land areas; Sea completes sea areas. When an area is surrounded and complete, whoever placed the final tile scores a point for each tile in that area. Some tiles contain bonus points for completing an area, tempting rival players to finish your territories for the bonus. Strategic tiles let you play a second tile or steal an opponent's tile (but never their last one). Players replenish their hand by choosing from two face-up tile stacks, adding decision-making to tile selection. The map grows organically as players compete. When the last tile is placed, tally points. The player or team with the most points wins.

Why you'll love it

Land vs Sea succeeds because it balances simplicity with surprising depth. The basic game teaches in minutes and plays fast, making it accessible to families and light gamers. The double-sided tiles add partial information: you know one side but must plan around hidden sides, creating strategic uncertainty. The bonus-point mechanic is brilliant: sometimes you complete a rival's area to claim their bonus, leading to clever negotiations and surprising decisions. The escalating complexity options (Mountains & Coral for chain scoring, Trade Routes with majority control, Waypoints for cooperation) transform the game for experienced players without overwhelming newcomers. The 3-player Cartographer mode is unique: it's truly asymmetric, ensuring all three players have different objectives. Perfect for puzzle lovers, strategy gamers, families, or anyone seeking a game where every placement matters. Games run 30–60 minutes depending on complexity and player count. The beautiful, colour-coded map grows visually satisfying as it develops.
