Carcassonne is a tile-laying masterpiece inspired by the medieval fortress in southern France. Players collaboratively build an ever-expanding landscape of cities, roads, monasteries, and fields while competing to score the most points. Each tile placed creates new opportunities for follower placement and strategic disruption. With simple yet rich mechanics, eighty-four tiles offering countless combinations, and included expansions (The River, The Abbot), Carcassonne appeals to beginners and veteran gamers alike. This modernised edition features updated artwork and streamlined gameplay.

How to play

Players draw tiles depicting cities, roads, monasteries, and fields, placing them to expand the shared landscape. After placing a tile, you can place one of your limited followers (knights, monks, farmers, or thieves) on that tile's features. Followers generate points when their features are completed: knights score for completed cities, monks score when monasteries are surrounded, farmers score for fields, and thieves score for roads. Once placed, followers remain until their feature completes—then you reclaim them and score points. The catch: only one follower can occupy a feature, so blocking opponents or connecting with their tiles for shared points requires clever tactics. As the landscape grows, opportunities to disrupt opponents' plans multiply. After all tiles are placed, calculate points and the player with the highest score wins.

Why you'll love it

Carcassonne brilliantly balances simplicity with strategic depth. The rules are easy to learn (teach newcomers in minutes), yet the decisions are genuinely tactical: Do you pursue quick points or commit followers to high-value features? Should you block an opponent's growing city or focus on your own monastery? The variable tile combinations ensure no two games play identically. Perfect for families (ages 7+), strategy gamers, casual players, or anyone seeking a game that's quick to learn yet rewarding to master. The tile-laying mechanic is intuitive and engaging—watching the landscape grow is visually satisfying. The two included expansions (The River, The Abbot) extend replayability without overwhelming complexity. Games run 30–45 minutes, making them ideal for casual nights or back-to-back rounds. The modernised edition's updated artwork and clearer design enhance the experience.
