Wyrmspan invites you to become an amateur dracologist, excavating hidden caverns and building a magnificent sanctuary for dragons of all shapes, sizes, and colours. Inspired by the beloved Wingspan but standing as a complex, standalone game, Wyrmspan offers unique mechanics: excavate cave spaces, entice dragons to roost, hatch hatchlings, chain powerful abilities, and earn the favour of four unique Dragon Guilds. With a 32-page full-colour dragon field guide, resource management through coins and eggs, and escalating strategic depth, Wyrmspan is a fantasy engine-builder for gamers seeking meaty gameplay and thematic immersion.
How to play
You begin with three excavated cave spaces: the Crimson Cavern, Golden Grotto, and Amethyst Abyss. Each round (four total), you gain 6 coins and 1 egg, then spend resources to excavate new cave spaces and play dragon cards. Playing a dragon requires first excavating a space in one of your three caves, then spending a cave card to entice that dragon to roost. Dragons have "when played" abilities and often powerful ongoing powers. Hatchlings (baby dragons) feature unique egg costs and one-time fully-grown abilities, adding progression. Explore your caves left-to-right to activate abilities and earn bonuses. Four guilds (different each game) offer unique in-game and end-game scoring benefits. Resource management is crucial: you can carry over coins and eggs between rounds (up to 9 each), and a 2-for-1 resource exchange is always available. At game's end, tally points from cave exploration, dragon abilities, guild favour, and end-round goals.
Why you'll love it
Wyrmspan succeeds because it balances accessibility with strategic depth. While inspired by Wingspan, it's a more complex, standalone experience with unique mechanics: excavation gates dragon placement, hatchlings add progression, guilds rotate for replayability, and resource management (coins and eggs) creates compelling decisions. The full-colour 32-page field guide (separate from cards) makes dragon cards vision-friendly and adds delightful lore. Perfect for strategy gamers, fantasy enthusiasts, Wingspan fans seeking a fresh challenge, or anyone enjoying engine-builders with thematic immersion. Solo play with dedicated mechanics ensures you can play anytime. At 90 minutes, games are meaty yet manageable. The dragon theme is immersive: you're not just collecting cards; you're building a living, breathing sanctuary where dragons interact and abilities chain together.
