Cockroach Poker is a bluffing game about deception and critter collection—but not in the way you'd expect. The goal isn't to collect matching sets; it's to force your opponents to collect four of the same type of critter. You'll pass cards face-down, declare what critter is inside, and hope your opponents believe your bluff. But they can peek, pass it onwards, and change the declared critter, creating a chain of suspicion and counter-bluffing. The player who ends up with four matching critters loses; everyone else wins. Simple rules, endless mind games, and creepy-crawly fun.

How to play

Each turn, a player takes a card from their hand, places it face-down on the table, and slides it to another player while declaring a critter type: "Cockroach," "Rat," or "Stink bug." The receiving player can either accept the card (claiming "true" or "false") or peek and pass it to another player, possibly declaring a new critter type. If a player accepts and is wrong, they keep the card; if right, the passing player keeps it. Once a card has been seen by all other players, it must be accepted. The game ends when someone collects four matching critters (and loses) or runs out of cards to pass. Everyone except the loser wins.

Why you'll love it

Cockroach Poker thrives on bluffing, reading opponents, and psychological gameplay. The "reverse set collection" mechanic is unique: you're trying to avoid collecting matching sets rather than pursue them, creating hilarious tension. The peeking and passing mechanism creates chains of deception where a single card might travel around the table multiple times with changing declared critters. Perfect for groups who love bluffing games (The Resistance, Coup), mind games, or anyone seeking quick, engaging social gameplay. The creepy-crawly theme is quirky and memorable—cockroaches, rats, and stink bugs make the game stand out from traditional card games. At 15–20 minutes, games move fast, encouraging multiple rounds. Ages 8+ means families can play together, though older teens and adults find the psychological depth genuinely engaging. The 64-card deck (eight types, eight copies each) is compact and travel-friendly.
