Cheating Moth is the card game that turns the rules on their head. Forget everything you know about playing fair—in this naughty, hilarious game, cheating isn't just allowed, it's essential. Get rid of all your cards before anyone else by playing the right cards, using sneaky tactics, and outsmarting your opponents with perfectly timed deception.
How the game works
Each round, players start with eight cards numbered 1–5, plus special action cards. On your turn, you play one card onto the discard pile; that card must be numbered exactly one higher or lower than the card on top. If you can't play, you draw from the deck. Simple so far—but here's where it gets sneaky.
The cheating mechanic is what makes Cheating Moth unique. Throughout the round, you can secretly get rid of cards by dropping them on the floor, hiding them up your sleeve, or slipping them into your pocket. You must keep your hand visible above the table at all times, you can only vanish one card at a time, and you can't cheat away your final card. But there's a catch: only the player holding the Guard bug can call out cheaters. If an accusation is false, the Guard draws a card as punishment. If the cheater is caught, they take back the card, receive an additional card from the Guard's hand, and become the new Guard.
Why cheating matters
Some cards—the "Cheating Moth" cards—can't be played onto the discard pile at all. The only way to get rid of them is through cheating. This forces players into a constant dance of bluffing, suspicion, and daring moves. The Guard must stay vigilant, but they can't cheat themselves, making the role both powerful and risky.
Action cards add chaos
Play an Ant and everyone else draws a card. A Cockroach triggers a speed race—everyone plays a matching number and only the fastest keeps their card on top. A Mosquito forces everyone to slap the pile, and the slowest player collects cards from all opponents. A Spider lets you hand a card to another player. These moments create unpredictable, laugh-out-loud chaos.
Scoring and strategy
When someone empties their hand, the round ends. Other players score 10 points for each Cheating Moth, 5 for each action card, and 1 for each number card. The player with the lowest score after a number of rounds equal to the player count wins. This reverse-scoring system keeps everyone competitive and engaged throughout.
Perfect for game nights where you want genuine laughter, playful competition, and moments that'll be talked about for weeks.
